Foster parenting creates a joyous forever family

April and Justin are like all parents managing life with four children under the age of 4. The pace is frantic, days are long, and activities are nonstop. But this Indianapolis couple wouldn’t change any of it. Soon, they will finalize their third adoption.

“We have fostered, we have adopted, we have offered respite care, and we have taken an emergency overnight placement. Each child holds a special place in our hearts, and there is no better way to give of your time than investing it in a child who needs love the most,” April said.

The couple decided to become foster parents after the passing of their biological daughter, who was 10. The couple connected with The Villages to become foster parents because of its proximity, and the growing number of children in need of placement.  Chloe, now 3, was the first child the couple adopted. Coincidentally, Chloe is the biological sister to April’s nephew (one of her brother’s adopted children).  Shortly after adopting Chloe, Madelyn, 4, joined the family.

This summer, Justin and April will welcome another daughter to their forever family. All while the couple continues to care for the adopted daughter’s 10-month-old sister.

Although the path from foster parenting to adoption can be challenging, April says she is grateful for The Villages staff support that was critical as the couple navigated Chloe’s adoption in Colorado. April says Andrew, who was their case manager at The Villages for nearly three years, provided advocacy and support through each foster care placement and adoption.

“Our choices have always been respected, we have never felt pressured to say yes to placement, and we have always removed ourselves from the call list when we are not ready to add another child to our family. We have felt nothing but love and support from The Villages throughout our entire journey,” April said.

The last few years have been a whirlwind for Justin and April, and they are overjoyed to have a home filled with laughter and love. “Foster care and adoption have been a huge blessing to our family. Our daughters are happy, loved, and thriving. They spend their days playing, singing, dancing and playing dress-up. They love learning and are full of energy. We are very blessed to be their mom and dad.”
