Celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month: The Villages’ Commitment to Supporting Hispanic Families

National Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated from September 15 to October 15, honors the rich cultural contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities. At The Villages, we proudly support Hispanic families through our Healthy Families program, which provides critical resources to new parents, helping them build a brighter future for their children.

Our program has significantly impacted non-English-speaking families, especially Hispanic families, by addressing the unique challenges they face in parenthood. Through bilingual support, culturally sensitive resources, and tailored guidance, we help families navigate essential services and access important benefits. With over 50% of our Healthy Families staff being bilingual, we ensure families feel understood, valued, and empowered to succeed.

One of the ways we assist families is by bridging language barriers that often prevent them from accessing vital necessities like food, diapers, and clothing. Many non-English-speaking families also struggle to connect with support programs that could greatly benefit them. Our team works tirelessly to ensure these families have the tools to thrive, providing guidance on local laws, safety practices, and cultural nuances.

Currently, The Villages serves 226 Hispanic families across 11 counties in Indiana. Our support extends beyond the typical scope of family programs, as non-English-speaking families often engage with Healthy Families for longer periods due to their specific needs. In addition to helping new parents start off on the right foot, we empower families to navigate the immigration system, access essential services, and find stability in their new environment.

This National Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate the resilience of Hispanic families and reaffirm our commitment to supporting them. At The Villages, every family, regardless of background or language, deserves the resources and care to thrive and create a bright future for their children.

Jessica’s Story

When Jessica joined Healthy Families, she was living in an unsafe environment due to domestic violence. Joselin, her Family Case Worker, immediately stepped in, prioritizing the safety of Jessica and her children. With compassionate guidance, Joselin helped Jessica secure a protective order and new housing, ensuring their safety and peace of mind.

Understanding the family’s urgent needs, Joselin also helped Jessica access essential resources such as SNAP and WIC benefits, as well as clothing and diaper supplies.

While participating in Healthy Families, Jessica tragically lost her brother in a car accident. Joselin connected Jessica with grief counseling services, providing crucial emotional support during this difficult time.

Jessica’s husband can only work as a landscaper during the warmer months due to his immigration status. Joselin assisted Jessica with finding employment, helping the family secure steady income and establish a

budget.

The support from Healthy Families has eased the family’s financial burden and improved their overall well-being, allowing them to focus on raising their three beautiful children.
