How Direct Financial Assistance Helped John’s Foster Family Thrive

When John Puckett became a licensed foster parent with The Villages in July 2023, he knew his journey would require both strength and compassion. A single parent with a big heart, John currently cares for two boys with high acuity needs while also opening his doors for emergency respite placements when called upon.

Like many foster parents, John balances the demands of full-time work with the responsibilities of nurturing and supporting children who have experienced trauma. This past summer, he faced a challenge that many working parents will recognize: how to provide his foster sons with safe, structured, and meaningful activities while he worked during the day.

John discovered a 10-week sports camp that was a perfect fit for the boys, offering them opportunities to make friends, learn teamwork, and channel their energy in positive ways. But at a cost of $2,800, the camp fee far exceeded what John’s foster care stipend could cover.

Because of donor support, The Villages’ Foundation was able to step in and fully cover the cost of the camp. The relief was immediate: John could focus on his job knowing the boys were safe, cared for, and engaged in healthy activities. The boys, in turn, gained a summer of memories, growth, and stability.

This is the impact of direct financial assistance. Your gifts bridge the gap between what foster families receive and what children actually need. They transform uncertainty into opportunity. They allow foster parents like John to focus on what truly matters, providing love, consistency, and healing for children who need it most.

“It was such a relief to know the boys had something structured and fun while I worked. I couldn’t have done it without the extra help.” — John P., Villages Foster Parent
